1. What Is The DAISY Award?

The DAISY Award is a meaningful, spirit stirring, recognition program that honors and recognizes exceptional nurses in healthcare facilities across the nation.

2. Why Was The DAISY Award Created?

The DAISY Award was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999. After his death, the family felt compelled to create an award that said, “Thank you!" to extraordinary nurses for their compassion and care in a very personal way.

3. What Does DAISY Stand For?

The term "DAISY" is an acronym that derives from the phrase Diseases Attacking the Immune System. 

4. Who Is Eligible To Be Nominated?

All licensed HUH nurses who demonstrate extraordinary, compassionate care are eligible to be nominated to receive a DAISY Award.

5. Where Is It Celebrated?

The DAISY Award is celebrated in over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing, across 31 countries.

6. How Can I Nominate Someone?

If you are a patient, family member, physician, fellow nurse or staff member, you are allowed to nominate a deserving nurse by completing an HUH DAISY Award Online Nomination Form. Letters and emails to the DAISY Award Committee will also be considered.

7. Who Chooses The Winner?

The Howard University Hospital DAISY Award Committee will select each winner.

8. Who Can Be Apart Of The Celebration?

Any HUH leadership, directors, managers, supervisors, administration, peers, or team members as well as the nominee may be a part of the celebration.

9. When Will The Winner Be Announced?

The Howard University Hospital DAISY Award winner will be announced on Thursday, May 8, 2025, during Nurses Week.

10. How Often Is the DAISY Award Celebrated?

The Howard University Hospital DAISY Award is celebrated on a quarterly basis.
