About The DAISY Award?

The DAISY Award is a meaningful, spirit stirring, recognition program that honors and recognizes exceptional nurses that serve in more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing, across 31 countries.  The DAISY Award was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999. After his death, the family felt compelled to say, “Thank you!" to extraordinary nurses in a very personal way. The term "DAISY" is an acronym that derives from the phrase Diseases Attacking the Immune System. 

Why We Choose The DAISY Award?

Howard University Hospital choose the DAISY Award to represent the great work of its nurses for a number of reasons, which includes the following:

  • Nursing is a profession where you…..”Make a Living by Caring.”

  • Our Mission and Vision are demonstrated through DAISY stories of care and compassion.

  • We celebrate what’s “RIGHT” in our hospital, which evolves around "Exceptional and Compassionate" care!

  • Patients and Families feel connected to the hospital through the nomination of their nurse, which may contribute to hospital loyalty and increase the likelihood of becoming their healthcare facility of choice.

  • The award and its accolades are a part of a larger goal to becoming "A World Class Hospital"

How Does The DAISY Award Work?

Here is some pertinent information on DAISY Award eligibility, nominations, winner selection and frequency:

  • Who is eligible to receive The DAISY Award? All licensed HUH nurses who demonstrate extraordinary, compassionate care.

  • How will they be nominated? Patients, family, physicians and staff members will all have access to nomination forms throughout our hospital and online. Letter, emails to administration will also be considered.

  •  Who chooses the Honoree? The Howard University Hospital DAISY Award Committee.

  • Who can be a part of the celebration? Any managers, administration, peers, and the nominee.

  • How often will we present the award? The DAISY Award will be presented 4 times a year.

The Impact Of The DAISY Award?

The DAISY Award greatly impacts the hospital in a number of positive ways. First, they serve as a catalyst for staff, patients and their families to gain a much better understanding of high quality and extraordinary compassionate care. Secondly, the awards enhance nurse engagement, improves satisfaction, and promotes well-being.  The DAISY Award also promotes organizational culture and a healthy workplace.

What Does A DAISY Award Honoree Receive?

Receiving a DAISY Award is a top honor at Howard University Hospital. Winners will likely receive:

  • A public celebration in the Unit with HUH Leadership and Team Members.

  • Your name and picture displayed on a DAISY Award wall.

  •  A personalized letter from the HUH CNO, a certificate, and a portfolio.

  •  A beautiful, hand-carved, “Healers Touch” sculpture from Zimbabwe.

  • A DAISY Award Honoree Pin.

  • Cinnamon Rolls to share with the entire Unit.

  • A banner to hang in the Unit until the next DAISY Award presentation.

  • A page on HUH and The DAISY Award International Website.
